Winter Wonderlands in the Heartland

Friday, December 6 | 2:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Gather at Sullivan Hardware and Garden and see how GardenComm member Pat Sullivan transforms the garden center into a holiday wonderland, complete with four trains that ride to see Santa Claus at one of two North Poles, through a village of animated shops. At Newfields (formerly Indianapolis Museum of Art), Jonathan Wright, the Ruth Lily Deputy Director for Horticulture and National Resources, will speak about the history of the gardens at Newfields, the transformation of the grounds with 1.5 million lights each fall to produce Winterlights, and what’s in store for the future on the campus.

Sullivan’s Hardware and Garden

Gather at Sullivan’s Hardware and Garden, 6955 N Keystone Ave.  Sullivan’s transforms their garden center into a holiday wonderland, complete with four trains that ride to see Santa Claus at one of two North Poles, through a village of animated shops. Families have made it a tradition to visit at least once during the holiday seasons. GardenComm members will be given a behind-the-scenes tour and hear from Pat Sullivan, owner and GardenComm member, about how he transformed his family hardware store into a year-round destination garden center and holiday venue, complete with restaurant, comedy nights, beer and wine.

Newfields

At Newfields (formerly Indianapolis Museum of Art), Jonathan Wright, the Ruth Lily Deputy Director for Horticulture and National Resources, will speak about the history of the gardens at Newfields, the transformation of the ground each fall to produce Winterlights, and what’s in store for the future on the campus. Winterlights was started in 2017 and now features more than 1.5 million holiday lights though out the grounds

A light supper, cheese, crackers and other munchies are available for purchase at the Winter Market, near the exit to WinterLights.

5:30 PM 
 

Attendees are invited to stroll the grounds beginning at dusk and enjoy the complete holiday display. They may depart at any time.


Saturday Optional Activities.
 

For those attendees who plan to spend the night in Indianapolis, we will provide an information sheet on other activities/attractions they may wish to visit on their own.
These include:

  • Indiana Historical Society Festival of Trees and Holiday Author Fair
  • Garfield Park Conservatory featuring holiday scale-model trains in a winter display 
  • Circle of Lights, based around Monument Circle in the heart of downtown Indianapolis

Participants in this program will learn how to turn seasonal gardening venues into destinations to visit in the wintertime. 

Housing

Members can choose from any local hotels for their overnight stay if one is required. Contact organizers if suggestions needed.

Food/Beverage

A light supper will be available for purchase at Newfields' Winter Market.
